Custom vs Wix and Squarespace

Real costs over three years, what you get for the difference, and when a builder is honestly the better pick. Written by someone who builds custom sites, so the disclosure is up front.

$29 or $4,000?When a builder plan is the smart choice, and when a custom site pays off

Short answer

Wix and Squarespace cost about $17 to $160 a month and are the right pick for a brand-new business on a tight budget that wants to build the site itself. A custom website costs more upfront, $4,000 to $6,000 at Chamberlin Design for a small business plus $199 a month, and pays off when the site has a job to do: sign people up, take bookings, answer service-area questions or load fast enough to compete on Google.

Honest answer

When a builder wins.

A custom site is not right for everyone.

  • You are brand new

If you are still figuring out what you sell, a $29 plan lets you learn before you invest.

  • You enjoy building it

Some owners like doing it themselves. Builders are good at that.

  • You need one simple page

Hours, a phone number and a map do not need a custom build.

  • Your budget is under $2,000

That is our minimum project, so a builder is the better fit for now.

When custom wins

When custom pays off.

  • The site has a job

Signing people up, taking bookings or answering whether you serve an address. JMT Sanitation's address check took them from about 20 new customers a week to 60.

  • You compete on Google

Speed, structure and a page for every service and town are easier to get right on a custom build.

  • You would rather not do it yourself

Your time is worth more running the business. Edits are a text away.

  • You want to own it

A custom site is yours, and it can move to any host.

If you are brand new and still figuring out what you sell, start with a $29 builder plan. That is my honest advice, even though I build custom sites. Come back when the site needs to do real work, like signing up customers, taking bookings or winning searches in your town.

Questions

Is a custom website worth it?

It is worth it when the site has a job to do and the extra customers or saved time cover the cost. For a brand-new business with one simple page, a builder is usually the smarter start.

Is Wix or Squarespace bad for SEO?

No. Both can rank. What matters more is whether the site is indexed, fast on phones and has a clear page for each service and question. A custom build makes speed and structure easier to control.

Can I move my Wix or Squarespace site to a custom site?

Yes. Builder designs cannot be exported, so the site is rebuilt, your content is carried over, and every old URL is redirected so you keep your search history.

Do I need to know code to update a custom site?

No. On our hosting and care plan, you send the change and it is done, usually within 24 hours.

What about WordPress?

WordPress sits in the middle. It is flexible and portable, but themes and plugins need regular updates. A custom Next.js site avoids most of that upkeep.
