Show up in AI search
How ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini decide which businesses to name, and the steps that make yours one of them. Written from setting this up for my own studio and for clients.
Short answer
AI assistants recommend businesses they can find and trust in the search indexes they read: Google, Bing, Brave and their own crawlers. To show up, get your site indexed in Google and Bing, allow AI search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot, keep a complete Google Business Profile and consistent listings, and publish pages that answer real customer questions with specific facts. Reviews and mentions on other sites matter too.
Each assistant reads an index.
None of them invent a list of businesses. They search, read what they find, and summarize it.
| Assistant | Where results come from | What helps most |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) plus partner search results | Allow OAI-SearchBot, be indexed in Google and Bing, keep listings current |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's search index and ranking systems | Pages indexed with snippets, a complete Google Business Profile |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing's index | Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow, Bing Places |
| Claude | Web search providers including Brave, plus Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot | Allow Claude-SearchBot, be crawlable by search engines |
| Perplexity | Its own crawler (PerplexityBot) plus live page fetches | Allow PerplexityBot, clear pages with facts and sources |
| Gemini app | Google's index, with Google-Extended controlling grounding | Do not block Google-Extended |
From each company's published crawler and search documentation, checked October 1, 2026.
How to get named.
In order. The first three matter more than everything after them.
01Get indexed
Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. If a search engine does not have your pages, no assistant built on it can find them.
02Let the AI crawlers in
Check that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Google-Extended. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers.
03Claim your listings
A complete Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business and the directories in your industry, all with the same name, phone and website. Local answers lean heavily on these.
04Give every question a page
One clear page per service, per industry you serve and per common question, like cost or timelines. Assistants quote pages that answer exactly what was asked.
05Answer first, with facts
Put a short, direct answer at the top, then specifics: prices, timelines, towns, results and dates. Specific facts are what get quoted.
06Earn mentions
Real reviews, local press, industry directories, a YouTube channel and helpful answers in communities. Mentions of your business on other sites are one of the strongest signals for AI visibility.
07Measure it
Search Console now reports on Google's AI features, and Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot. Once a month, ask the assistants yourself the questions your customers ask.
Not worth your time.
- Keyword stuffing. Research on generative search found that adding sources, quotes and statistics helped visibility, while stuffing keywords did not.
- Hundreds of near-identical pages. Swapping a city name into the same page is what Google calls doorway pages, and its spam policies cover mass-produced pages with little value.
- Fake reviews. The FTC rule on fake reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024, with penalties per violation.
- Paying for an AI ranking guarantee. Nobody controls what ChatGPT or Google says. Spend that money on the steps above.
Google says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and that original, first-hand content matters more than any trick.
From the builder
I am running this exact playbook on chamberlin.design. The keyword map came from real search data, every page on this site answers one question, the AI crawlers are allowed in, and the business listings are next. When the numbers come in from Search Console and Bing, they go into this guide.
Questions
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
When ChatGPT searches the web, it pulls results from its own crawler and search partners, reads the pages it finds, and summarizes them. Businesses with clear, specific pages, consistent listings and mentions across trusted sites are the ones it can find and confidently name.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It helps a little at most. Google has said it does not use llms.txt. It costs nothing to add and some AI tools may read it, so it is worth having, but it is not a substitute for being indexed.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
Structured data helps search engines understand who you are, what you offer and where you work. Google says it is not required for AI features, but it supports the clear entity information that assistants rely on.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Recommendations inside answers are not for sale. Some assistants show labeled ads separately, which is a different thing from being recommended.
How long does it take to show up?
Getting indexed takes days once your site is in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Showing up in answers builds over weeks and months as your pages, listings and mentions grow.
Does this work for a local business?
Yes, and local businesses have an advantage. Local answers lean on Google Business Profiles, Bing Places and Apple Business, and most local competitors have not set them up fully.
