Not showing up on Google?
A 10-minute check you can run yourself, the most common reasons a site is missing from Google, and the fix for each one.
Short answer
Most of the time a website does not show up on Google because Google has not indexed it yet, something is blocking it, or there is no page that matches what people search. Check with a site:yourdomain.com search, verify the site in Google Search Console, submit a sitemap and request indexing. To show up in Google Maps, you also need a verified Google Business Profile.
The 10-minute check.
Free, and no technical skills needed.
01Search site:yourdomain.com
Type it into Google with your own domain. No results means Google has not indexed the site at all.
02Open Google Search Console
Verify your site, then paste your homepage into the URL Inspection tool. It tells you whether the page is indexed and why not.
03Look for a hide-from-search setting
Builders have a switch that hides a site from search engines, and developers sometimes leave a noindex tag on after launch.
04Submit your sitemap
Add your sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so both know every page you have.
05Search what customers search
Try your service plus your town. If competitors show up and you do not, you likely need a page for that service.
06Check Google Maps
Search your business name in Maps. If nothing shows, you need a Google Business Profile, and it has to be verified.
Common causes and fixes.
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| New site, not crawled yet | site: search shows nothing | Verify in Search Console, submit the sitemap, request indexing |
| Hidden from search engines | URL Inspection says excluded by noindex | Turn off the builder's hide setting or remove the noindex tag |
| Blocked in robots.txt | URL Inspection says blocked by robots.txt | Allow search engines in robots.txt |
| No page for the search | You show up for your name but not your services | Give each service, and towns where you have real work, its own page |
| Two versions of the site | Both www and non-www load | Redirect one to the other so Google sees one site |
| Slow on phones | PageSpeed Insights mobile score is low | Lighter images, fewer apps and scripts, or a faster build |
| Missing from Maps | No listing when you search your name in Maps | Create and verify a Google Business Profile |
From the builder
I ran this same check on chamberlin.design and found what a lot of owners find: Google had only picked up the home page, under an old title. The fix is the list above. Search Console, a full sitemap, and a real page for every service and question, which is what you are reading now.
Questions
How long does it take Google to index a new website?
Often a few days to a few weeks. Verifying the site in Search Console and submitting a sitemap usually speeds it up.
Why does my site show up for my name but not my services?
Google matches searches to pages. If you have one page that lists ten services, it competes poorly against businesses with a full page for each one. Give each service its own page.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps after verification?
New profiles can take time to appear, and categories matter. Check that your primary category matches what you do, your service area is set, and the profile is not suspended in your Business Profile dashboard.
Do I have to pay Google to show up?
No. Regular search results and Maps listings are free. Paid ads are a separate, labeled section.
Can a Wix or Squarespace site rank on Google?
Yes. Any platform can rank if the site is indexed, fast and has a clear page for each search. Custom sites make speed and structure easier to get right.
